5/30/2023 0 Comments Ghost Light by Joseph O'ConnorA stroke of genius., Ghost Light is a tender and compassionate love story, and a fine stepping stone to the majesty of Synge., Ghost Light is a spirited novel. One of the novel's great achievements is not just to display imaginative power but also to show how the imagination works. It is a great love story, with extras: a virtuoso display of literary talent, a tribute to the Hiberno-English heritage of lore and lyricism and an interpretation of the Irish literary revival as the fruit of settler and native, Protestant and Catholic. It is a profoundly sad story, but triumphant., Joseph O'Connor's seventh novel, Ghost Light, will give days of pleasure to tens and tens of thousands of readers. Ghost Light stands up to scrutiny on its own terms. Admirers of his writing will take pleasure not only in the ambitious range of Ghost Light and its depth of feeling but also in the nods in the direction of the author's immediately preceding novels, Redemption Falls, and, before that, Star of the Sea. O'Connor has fashioned a deeply moving, beautifully written story.

Even though she's a widow, she's not one of those stereotypical "virgin widows" and she loved her late husband, who was - gasp! - an engaged and attentive lover and not gay/impotent/abusive (as the trope often is). + Beth was a step up from most romance novel heroines. He enjoys patterns, numbers, and has obsessive interests. He has trouble looking people in the eyes and grasping humor and metaphors. + Ian's Asperger's was handled very well, for the most part. I also liked how they never felt interchangeable. It was obvious they all cared about one another, even if they had difficulty expressing that. + The relationships between the Mackenzie brothers. There were aspects of the story that I liked a lot, and there were aspects that I think could have been done better. Now that I've read TMOLIM, I'm not sure what to think. The fact that it boasted a hero with Asperger's disorder made TMOLIM even more compelling, especially with a price drop that brought the book down to $1.99 on Amazon. The book is on many lists on Goodreads, ranking at #21 on 100 Historical Romances To Read Before You Die and #25 on Favorite Historical Romance Novels. THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE has been on my radar for the better part of a decade. Soon Charlaine was looking for another challenge, and the result was the much darker Lily Bard series. Her first Teagarden, Real Murders, garnered an Agatha nomination. After a child-producing sabbatical, Charlaine latched on to the trend of series, and soon had her own traditional mystery books about a Georgia librarian, Aurora Teagarden. The resulting two stand-alones were published by Houghton Mifflin. After holding down some low-level jobs, her husband Hal gave her the opportunity to stay home and write. Though her early output consisted largely of ghost stories, by the time she hit college (Rhodes, in Memphis) Charlaine was writing poetry and plays. Charlaine lives in Texas now, and all of her children and grandchildren are within easy driving distance. A native of the Mississippi Delta, she grew up in the middle of a cotton field. Charlaine Harris has been a published novelist for over thirty-five years. 5/30/2023 0 Comments The arrest of arsène lupinMon. Felix Davey was leaving the apartment in which he lived on the fourth floor of No. 8 and Mon. Dubreuil, who had united into a single apartment the fifth floor of the same house and the fifth floor of the two adjoining houses, was moving on the same dayâ âa mere coincidence, since the gentlemen were unknown to each otherâ âthe vast collection of furniture regarding which so many foreign agents visited him every day.Ī circumstance which had been noticed by some of the neighbors, but was not spoken of until later, was this: None of the twelve vans bore the name and address of the owner, and none of the men accompanying them visited the neighboring wine shops. HarmonChristian barely has time to grasp that when Gray also tells him that Chris is the one who left, and although he never said why, it’s clear Gray believes it’s because Chris was cheating and wanted to be with someone else. Gray continues to visit him, but Christian is confused by the coolness and distance between them, and he’s stunned when Gray finally, and not without some bitterness, tells him they broke up over four years earlier. When Gray finally comes to see him, he tells the man that his name Christian Cross – but that doesn’t ring any bells or bring anything back. The one thing he can remember is the name of his boyfriend – Grayson Laurie, a doctor at the hospital. A man wakes in a hospital bed after almost dying from a gunshot wound to the head, and has absolutely no idea who he is, or who wants him dead. Please be aware that Chrysalis ends inconclusively and that the story continues in the second book, Cross, which I believe will be released in audio in late August. Harmon in the past and even though the narrator is new-to-me, I decided to give the audiobook version a go. I liked the sound of the storyline of Chrysalis, book one in The Formicary duo, so as I’ve enjoyed books by S.E. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Sisters by danielle steel summaryWhen her husband, Richard, enters into the foreign service, Alex is recruited into MI6 and tasked with obtaining information from the various people she meets socially. He devotes a great deal of time to describing the Puritans and their relatively enlightened political culture and social homogeneity. In the first part Tocqueville describes America’s geography: its large continent, Native populations, and vast opportunities for productive agriculture and European settlement. He states plainly, “Therefore it is not only to satisfy a curiosity, otherwise legitimate, that I have examined America I wanted to find lessons there from which we could profit” (12). He is painfully aware that the age of aristocracy has passed, but in Europe it has not been fully replaced with a viable alternative. In his introduction Tocqueville emphasizes that his main preoccupation is America’s example as a functioning democracy. The first volume is based on Tocqueville’s nearly yearlong sojourn in the United States, ostensibly to study its prisons and prison reform. |
